Another Dollar Coin?

WTF, they say that the new dollar coin is larger in diameter, and thicker
than the Suzi B, or the Pocahontas buck. One can only hope. I loved the old silver dollar, the ones that gram pa gave us. They felt real, heavy and solid. I will be getting one later today.

Larger and thicker doesn't necessarily mean heavier, have to wait and see.
They made so much money on the state quarters they're doing the same thing with the dollars. Every buck that goes into a collection is a win for the Feds.

"How" does "who" make money? Do they buy coins from from the mint for more than face value?

The mint sells first-run and uncirculated coins at higher than face value, Spexx. That's where the expression "mint in box" comes from.

Edit: For example, your options for collectible Alabama quarters.

Well, conflating Sacagawea with Pocahontas is a two-century stretcher.

I date back to the Ben Franklin silver dollar, though my favorite was probably the Ike. A handsome coin, of reassuring size and heft -- which alas made carrying more than about one of them at a time a great awkward pocket lump.

I take it you mean the Franklin half dollars ('48 - '63). There were no business strike dollar coins during that time period.

The Ike dollars were controversial as Ike was against debasing silver coins and the business strikes bearing his likeness were cupro-nickel. They tried to get around that by striking collectors' editions in actual silver; however, the unpopularity of general circulation coins of that size with no intrinsic value caused the Ike's demise. Even a reduction in size to the current dimensions of base metal dollar coins has not made them acceptable. The days of the "cartwheels" are gone; until, they can find a gimmick as alluring as precious metals ... maybe Gummy Dollars!

Speaking of which, does anybody have a mint Illinois or Ohio? Those are the only two I haven't found, otherwise completely up to date. Will trade for anything in the 2006 selection.

Sure, I've heard "mint condition", but never "mint in box". What does a dollar sell for? That sounds so fucked up, like going to a dollar store and asking "how much is this?"

Depends on the dollar.

You can't buy bills from the mint (but there are of course dealers who specialize in rare bills), but for dollar coins you have the Sacajewea golden dollar ($35.50 for a roll of 25 coins,) or the new series of Presidential dollar coins ($35.95 for a roll of 25 coins). But these are just the new releases--like the bills, there are many many other styles of coins of varying rarity that you can buy from coin shops or dealers if you're into collecting that sort of thing.

Why yes, I have numismatists in my family, why do you ask?
