May 23, 2010: Travelling Commode in form of Large Book

Neatorama finds this item which sold at auction.

The name of the book is Historia Universalis, which makes me wonder if it was chosen for its irony. The book is a fake, obviously, which folds out to construct the device seen here. You'd put a chamber pot underneath, and then you'd sit and then, I suppose, you'd have to aim. Really well.

Another historical skill lost to invention.

The auction site says "An unusual example of the use of the book form to disguise travelling personal furniture, probably for use on the military field." Ah, marksmanship.

"personal furniture," - best use of euphemism yet!

I don't think the aim would be that big a deal.... you'd be firing from point blank range, I'd think.

splinters or being pinched might be a hazard on a worn model like that one...

I can't imagine why they're not still around.

Nice reference!

This was one of the funniest shows ever, and of course I thought of the Burgandy Loaf immediately when I saw this thread.

Charming, but I, for one, am quite grateful for the modern improvements in the porta-potty.
