my first Cobol program... submitted on punched card... 537 errors..... I misplaced a '.'......

In COBOL, it only takes one missed period to result in an abortion.

A modern programming language wouldn't give you 537 errors for that, it would realize you'd missed the period and add it. Then it would give you 537 warnings.
