USA heartland

A good story of a New Yorker getting edumacated about the heartland of America, one state at a time.

Quote:
I suspected that spending most of my adult days in New York City and the rest largely outside the country had left significant gaps in my knowledge of America, not to mention unfair biases about the 10 heartland states I would be visiting, many of which I had never set foot in before.

My suspicion turned out to be true.

I drove 2,000 miles from Texas to Oregon in a truck that only had an AM/FM radio.

There was a huuuge stretch of coverage by High Plains Public Radio.

They had so many call letters, and even more repeaters.

We found a lost mtn biker from NYC on the trail today. My buddy takes the dudes map to show him where he is and you could just see the city boy nonsense go through his head, like we'd steal his map er something. Silly New Yawkers living in their weird little bubble. I should have hummed a few bars of Dueling Banjos...

I'm going to set aside some proper time to rad this.
It's the kind of journey which fascinates me.

Thank you.

On the left side of the first page at the link, there are links to a whole series of frugal road trips through the US.
