Education?
I'm starting the new thread to forestall additional thread hijacking on the "Continue Religion Debate to Infinity Here" thread ...
Read this today in the NY Daily News. The problems in the educational system are multiple, obviously, but it's very difficult to make any positive changes when the educational materials being provided are as bad as are being pointed out in this article. Can anyone with offspring confirm any of the info about their own kids textbooks? I know that what we get in schoolbooks isn't perfect. And it's gotten worse since I was in school. (I did play "spot the errors" with grad school textbooks, most of which cost >$75 "because of the stringent proofreading and editing standards for texts" which is of course bullshit.) But at least by the time that one gets to gradual school one has developed the ability to think critically and question the information that's being presented to you. Elementary school students are basically little sponges that soak up and regurgitate pretty much everything you tell them. What's that saying ... "Give me your children until they are 12 and they will be mine forever?"
