I am awful, I just stick pictures on, I don't host them anywhere. I tried it, but I had difficulties with some of the hosting sites.

I think the checkboxes are only for pictures in posts which are still "editable" for text as well. I think the general edit window is 24 hours.

If you delete the pictures, or even host them on another domain, when going back and reading old posts they don't make sense with little red x's.
