Just think...what if, instead of dogs, they were 70-100 lb cats? Going after each other like those dogs were.

I wouldn't even try to shoot them, I'd rather just shoot myself.

WTF? Isn't that exactly what the .45 was made for, high stopping power at close range?
Well, not exactly, it was more for explosive-laden Japanese on suicide runs, not vicious pit-bulls, but I would think the effect should still work.

Can anyone explain this to me? Were the dogs just that #$%&ing crazy? Am I wrong about the .45?

Absolutely, due to whatever reason, shot placement prolly played a big role there.

Okay, I see the point about hitting a vital area on a small, fast-moving target. Thanks.

Not sure about that, Zip. If you're delivering megatons, a near miss counts as a hit.

Yes, close range is undefined, but most exchanges with humans take place within 12 feet or so.

Shot placement prob played a part. A gut shot animal can move quite a distance before going down. Anyone who has hunt game and had the unfortunate experience of knowing you hit something and lose it in the bush could relate. Given the tenacity of a Pitbull on the attack I would suspect unless he hit the dogs in the spine, head, or chest/lungs/heart, they could carry on for quite a bit. JMHO.

the .45 was put into service in 1911, hence the name.

The link to the Moro Rebellion (top link) is a very interesting read in light of what is going on in Afghanistan. Same tactics a hundred years later.

That is just the sickest feeling. Knowing you've wasted an animal.
