Aug 2, 2010: Oh Hail

The guy that found it says it was about 3 inches bigger, but the power outage following the storm, knocked out the power to his freezer.

AP photo

Quote:
America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration committee declared that the hailstone, found in the town of Vivian on July 23, measures a whopping eight inches in diameter and weighs a hefty one pound, 15 ounces. The committee says the South Dakota ice chunk breaks records set by hailstones discovered in Nebraska and Kansas.”
A guy I know from another forum was driving to Colorado that day, and every piece of sheet metal on his truck, except the driver's door, looks like it was beaten with a hammer.

True. Having frozen blue balls falling from the sky could be painful.

1) the background of this pic bothers me. is that a guy's hairy . . . chin?

2) I'm terrified of hail because I have no garage and no cover where I park. Would a typical car cover help prevent some of the damage from a hailstorm--do you know?

That area must b prone to those kinds of atmospheric events. I recall years ago a road trip to the Black Hills. The radio was constantly listing off places where people could take their vehicles to have the hail damage assessed. Pity the poor car dealer with a lot full of brand new cars every one having that Titleist dimpled look.

It would, but only up to a specific size then.. no difference.

Occasionally the blue ice comes down and it's nasty.. It's from airliners with leaking sewer valves. One the size of a large bread box came down on a boat in our local yacht harbor. It wasn't pretty.

You see what you want to see. Personally, I don't go looking for hairy man flesh.

Saw hail twice in my life. In the early 1960's in Montana and thirty years later just north of the Everglades near the south end of Lake Okeechobee.

Hail the king! Who said the hell with the king? No, Your Majesty! We said HAIL the king! Well, stop hailing while I'm reigning!
