There has been a trend over the last decade or two to put the "stuff" in storage and have more hands-on exhibits with buttons and such to push for the children. This is in pretty much all the Smithsonian museums on the Mall. Not the art museums though.

I was sad when they got rid of the Arts and Industries museum entirely and replaced it with some Discovery something or other museum that had zero stuff and just buttons to push.

They used to have a human powered cast iron table saw in that old museum. A big flywheel and cranks on either side.
Huge steam engines. That kind of stuff.
