Mia, my Chihuahua wanted outside and I had to feed the baby calf. Maybe Mia thinks she is a big puppy, she wanted to play with her. I call the calf Navy. She is a blue roan and white. She has an iodine stain on her belly where we sprayed her umbilical cord after she was born. It will wear off. Behind her is a large igloo dog house, she can walk right in it! She is not tall enough to nurse her Mom so I have to feed her.

And Mom won't lay down? This seems like a very poor set of survival skills.

Cows legs don't work like dogs' or cats'. When they lay down their udders are underneath them.
Preemie calves would not survuve, simple as.
Survival of the fittest, ya know.

Cute, cute pic BTW.
One thing I miss about not having a car is the occasional glimpse of Spring lambs.
Ooh! Maybe I'll see some from the train today!

Cows haven't exactly been left to natural evolution for quite some time either. First domesticated around 8000BC according to wiki.

We have some calves that nurse Mom laying down but a preemie chills easier and learns slower. At 5 days she is up to speed but may have been away from Mom too long. She weighs almost 38 lbs now and Mom weighs 1500lbs. Hate to have her lay on her.

Do you feed her her mom's milk? Don't calves get most of their immune system and other stuff from mom's milk?

She did have Mom's milk for 2 days. A calf has a stomach much like a mono gastric animal when they are born. After 12 hours they cannot adsorb any more colostrum antibodies[first milk] Now she has milk replacer. Yes I know how to milk a cow

She is a club calf they are a composite of several breeds. The blue coloring comes from red shorthorns somewhere in her pedigree. She is maine anjou, Angus, Simmental, Shorthorn, Chianina. She is a mutt [crossbred]
