Jan 11, 2011: Sundog

APOD has this great photo by Peter Rosen, of this Sundog (parhelia) in Sweden.
They also explain how this is caused by millions of ice crystals in the air.

Very pretty.

Mr Rosen was smart, or very lucky, to be at the right place at the right time.

Looks like he was walking along the edge of the roof back and forth a couple of times looking for the best perspective from up there.

why do they call it a Sundog? It's clearly a SunCAT!

It is clearly shopped, but not the sundog part. Being digital, all photos have to have some degree of digital "manipulation" or interpretation to be seen. RAW capture, uncorrected, is pretty awful to look at.

This image looks like an HDR image that's had a lot of color saturation.

Cat? Sweden, winter, ice crystals, snow, surely you jest.

I thought it looked HDR, too.

Yahoo posted up a pic similar to this, in California. The leading edge of a strong Pacific storm was bringing in the water vapor, and the sun was going down.

It wasn't as strong an effect as this one, but it was clearly evident.

My verdict: not shopped. Ice crystals would be a better medium for this, than water vapor.

I saw a sundog in Kauai or Cancun (I can't remember which) last year, but didn't know what it was. It was directly overhead.

I think I took a picture.
