Two wrongs have never made a right. Surely if there's anything to think about on remembrance day, it's that so many people gave their lives because someone thought they had to 'get someone else back' for something.

I'd say leave him be. He probably was just doing his job, and if not, leave him be anyway. Karma will take care of him sooner or later.

It was heartening to see such a good turn-out at the Cenotaph this year (Collingwood, Ontario). In additon to the regular WWII & Korean Vets, there were a few from Afghanistan, including a young Corporal, that I briefly served with.

Right now Canada has only 3 Vets from the Great War. In addition, "Smokey" Smith, Canada's last living VC, recently past.

I was watching a show today about olde English villages. They were interviewing these two older English gentlemen who seemed so delightful and pleasant.

I wondered, given their age, what hell they endured during WWII and marvelled at how it hadn't jaded them. I wish decorated veterans would wear their medals once a year. It would give me a chance to at least acknowledge them if not engage them in conversation and offer a measure of gratitude and/or respect.

I watched the start of the ceremony at the Cenotaph on TV before I left for work on Sunday. One of the standard songs they play is The Minstrel Boy. Although I knew it anyway (from school) it now makes me think of UG!

The Minstrel Boy fits on the bagpipes. With some strategic whacks of the arrangement-hammer, so does The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The usual run of the tune goes below where the pipes will play, so it's a distinctly "pipes" version of the tune.

A favorite memory of ours is one St. Patrick's Day encountering a singer livening up a restaurant with Irish tunes of several descriptions, and joining in on Minstrel Boy with such fervor that the singer waved us up with him to reprise the chorus, rallentando.

Yes, VC is Victoria Cross, and you'll see Brit and Commonwealth military being styled "Thomas Atkins VC" quite after the manner of other UK alphabetic awards.

This man is wearing a poppy. So do you have fundraising via poppies without Remembrance Day? Or do you wear them on Veterans Day?

Basically the same thing, 11/11 and yes, though the poppies are less common in the States these days. I remember them from my earlier years.

What is more visible now is a revival of our World War Two "my son/daughter is in the service" banner being hung in windows: white banner, red border all the way around, blue five-point star in the center. If the person dies in service, the star is changed to one of gold.
