May 16th, 2016: McMurray Pets
You’ve certainly heard about the hellacious fires at Fort McMurray in Canada.
You may have heard about Lee Ellis who got back to town after the evacuation had started and the road was jammed so he figured he’d wait till the end before leaving. Talking to evacuees on the phone, people begged him to take care of their pets giving him the passcodes to their homes, and telling him where the food was stored. He was making about twenty stops a day on his bike, after four days, using his car. That’s when the authorities grabbed him and escorted him to the evacuation point. There are several stories about the RCMPs rounding up pets like Marshall the pig and getting them fed and sheltered. A lot of people were able to take their pets with them, but once safely out of the danger area where do you go, especially if one of the burnt houses is yours. Probably many families were forced to split up. scattering to friends or relatives. One thing is for sure, a lot of them wanted to fly. Anyone who has flown with a pet, or even knows someone who did, has heard horror stories. Enter (drumroll) Canadian North and WestJet airlines. "Due to the unusual circumstances we were able to bend the rules to accommodate these animals," I’m guessing these two airlines have earned some loyal fans. link

US homeless shelters need to be emailed this story A LOT. One of the major reasons childless women in this country cite for staying in an abusive relationship is "I couldn't find anywhere that would let me bring my pet so my abuser doesn't torture it to death the minute I save myself, and all my family/friends live in no-pet rentals."
There is a battered women's shelter literally right down the block from me. They have a lovely little playground that I've seen kids use maybe 5 times in 8 years, because (what a shock) battered women worried about being stalked are highly reluctant to let their kids run around in full view with only a short wooden fence for protection. I wonder how many more women they could save by building small dog and cat kennels next to the playground? They could use the solid walls of the kennel buildings (cats in one, dogs the other) to block view of the playground from the 2 nearest streets, and they have a huge yard that would easily fit a couple of dog exercise runs. I know money is short and animals are even harder to work with than kids, but FFS if we want these women to get out of the trap in their own heads and leave their abusers we should seriously consider the fate of their furry family members too. |

Snakeadelic, you're suggesting we should care about each other.
That concept, at some point, became un-American.
