October 1, 2006: Hoe slices into bridge

Neatorama noticed this item last week; I hadn't seen it before, although clearly it happened in February, so you know the deal.

Snopes documents it thoroughly:
Quote:
The photographs displayed above capture the aftermath of an accident that occurred on the evening of 13 February 2006 on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas. The driver of a semi-tractor trailer that was hauling a track hoe excavator on a flatbed misestimated the clearance at an overpass, and the boom of the hoe collided with the overpass and knocked a 45-foot gap through the deck of the bridge. The accident forced an 11-day closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. (The bridge itself remained closed even after the highway reopened.)

The driver of the rig was uninjured, although he was later cited for not having clearance to drive on the interstate. The Kansas Department of Transportation said the construction company for which the driver worked would be liable for the cost of repairs to the overpass, which were estimated at $134,000 as of late March 2006.

He was told distinctly NOT to use that highway, but he wanted to save some time.

I thought this had been an IOtd but I couldn't find it when it was in WTF.

He only misestimated by a couple of feet. See pictures two and four. The arm was down, pointed forward when it hit. It pierced the bridge below the roadbed and guardrail. This caused it to start pointing upward, which caused the cab to push downward, crushing the flatbed it was on (see pics one and four). The arm made it through the road, and momentum caused the cab to swing forward, smashing against the bottom of the opposite side of the bridge (pic one and two).

And yes, I think this was on the Cellar at some point...

Though, even for that one, there was this response:

Long time lurker first time poster...

Years ago (maybe 10?) when I worked in news I got to cover a story where a Caterpillar D10 dozer met a bridge the driver thought was higher then it really was. The people in cars behind the tractor trailer carrying the dozer said the D-10 bounced. Bear in mind that a D-10 weighs over 146 thousand pounds (73 tons). The bridge obviously suffered damage and was closed for a short period of time.

The dozer on the other hand, actually faired pretty well. It was on it's side after being ripped from the trailer but looked pretty much like a D10 on its side. They took it back to the Cat manufacturing plant to be checked out. I'm told that with some very minor repair to the engine and a little paint it was apparently put back out for sale. I never heard if they told the dealership it was shipped to and the customer who bought it that it had duked it out with a bridge.

could you imagine driving along the overpass and suddenly seeing that massive hunk of metal explode out of the ground?!? at least no one was seriously hurt. you've gotta love the sheer incompetency of some truck drivers.

Welcome to the Cellar, Lscan.
It's hard to picture a D-10 bouncing, must have been spring steel.

No kidding. My first reaction would probably be that the giant battle-robots had finally arrived to begin ravaging our planet.
