Well, certainly a loss, though I never was a fan of the man. He was a bit left for me, but... it takes all kinds. I wish his family well in dealing with their substantial losses.

It's long been said that famous people die in sets of 3. Today also sees the passing of actor Richard Harris. I wonder who will be the third...

Wellstone seemed to have his ideals and his politics aligned, not a common thing in Washington. We could use a few more idealists in this world. Whenever a politician or someone in a political family dies, I'm put in the awful position of knowing there is one group which I hold an ugly bias against and cannot mourn. I need to learn to separate the people from what they do.

According to Minn law he has to be replaced on the ballot, so we won't see the kind of scheming we've seen in recently NJ or the spector of someone losing to a dead man as in Mo(?).

According to the NYTimes

"In addition to Mr. Mondale, Democrats were discussing as possible replacements Alan Page, a state Supreme Court justice and former Minnesota Vikings player; Mr. Hatch; Ted Mondale, the son of the former vice president; and Hubert H. Humphrey III, known as Skip, a former state attorney general and also the son of a former vice president."

He was faithfully anti-war, that will be missed severely.

I've admired Paul Wellstone since I first heard him speak in 1990. See, I found that, on most things we did agree, or were not too far off. He truly was my guy. Its surprising how personal this is for me, and everyone I know, because its wrapped up in this hopefulness he inspired. Yesterday, work just kind of stopped and people made their way to the campaign headquarters and the capitol to pay their respects. I see a green Wellstone lawn sign (everywhere), or the old green bus, and I choke up. He was a smart, strong, and sincere man who was larger than life, or maybe just the right size. He was energy, he was accessible, and he was dedicated to making this world a better place. Damn if that unappologetic liberal couldn't dig in and make his point. Points that needed to be made. He was one of the good guys. Paul represented me and did an inspiring, excellent job. Whew. I'm so proud of him.

But what now...?
We'll see what happens to his important seat. Its time to get down to business. (Paul would give a hug and then a kick in the pants) If Mondale steps up, I know he'll win it.

Game on. The memorial turned rally, Fritz took the gig, GW flew in for photo ops, Norman's playing it well, one two-party debate, the independent and green candidates are snubbed, Jesse (wanting to be a player) appoints an independent temp senator, and it goes down tomorrow. Every ballot will be hand counted.

Whatever your views, everybody vote tomorrow. Remember this guy and dont take it for granted.

Warch, they're saying Fritz was a bit feisty in the debate...did you watch it? Also, from what I'm reading on MSNBC, a member of the Independence Party is likely to take the governorship?

The MO debacle was good and bad. Good b/c John Ashcroft is an evil evil evil puke. Bad b/c now the whole world has to deal with him.

Mel Carnahan was a great governor, and he is sorely missed. Given her lack of experience, Jean Carnahan has not done too bad as a Senator. On the other hand, Jim Talent isn't a bad guy either (he was a congressman previously in the western St. Louis suburbs).

Sycamore breaks down the NJ election mess:

--Forrester: a puke
--Torricelli: a puke
--Lautenberg: the man who can apparently do no wrong
--What the democrats did: Shady, but necessary from the democrats' point of view
--Would the republicans have done it if in the same position?: Likely, but the dems have particularly shown their great ability to be stuntmen in recent times.

I didnt see it, but was streaming audio here. The strategy was for Mondale to dispell the notion that he's out of touch/too old, and for Coleman to press it. Fritz had to come out strong and I thought he did well. Coleman is such a yes-man and I think his inexperience with international, nationals and even statewide issues was highlighted. As mayor of Saint Paul....In Saint Paul I...blah blah. In the debate, Coleman was "Norman" and Mondale was "Mr. Vice President" I thought that worked for Mondale. There was no doubt he could handle the issues.
On the question of war with Iraq, Coleman went first and towing the Bush admin line. stressed the need to demonstrate "strength". Mondale stressed the need to work in concert with the UN and our allies as a true measure of strength, and made a point of aligning himself with Colin Powell and against the views of Cheney. At the end, Fritz got the final closing remarks, and at least via audio, he stuck the landing.
As for governor, its too close to call. The last I heard Pawlenty, the Pro life republican, was in the lead. Independent Penny is a strong candidate,(my second choice). A former democrat, he will unfortunately take many votes from DFL Roger Moe who I feel would do the best job.

Shall we hijack this thread?

I was gonna start a who ya voting for thread but then I figured we could piggyback here. I'm always on the fence about the moral implications of voting (an act of force) but with the national socialists running the GOP you have to vote for something else. So here goes Ken Krawchuk LPPA for Gov. PA and I'll vote for whoever the Greens (communists) are running against Rep. Sherwood R car salesman (national socialist) since no one else is running.

What are the mechanics surrounding the counting of absentee ballots in Minn? Are they throwing out all the pre-Mondale Ballots or just those marked for Paul?

As far as I know, just those marked for Wellstone. You have to resubmit them by 5pm today (by US Mail) or by 3pm tomorrow (if you or your agent brings them by a polling place).

Griff, National Socialists? As in Nazi-like?

I'm going with Ed Rendell for Governor of PA, Joe Hoeffel for Congressman in the "temporary" 13th district (though I think this may wind up being permanent).

Just trying to stir up trouble. Rendell? You move to PA and immediately join the machine... sigh ...Warren T would never do something like that.

Ed Rendell is a muthaphuckin pimp.

Seriously, Rendell, Fisher, and Krawchuk all seem like decent guys (I don't know who the other candidates are, and they probably aren't worth my time anyway). In looking at the candidates as a whole, I find that Rendell's positions most closely mirror what I support.
