Feb 10, 2010: Mini-Origami

If you've ever tried Origami (paper folding from Japan), you know it's difficult to plan and to execute.
My attempts have been unmitigated disasters, and there's no way to make it more difficult...

...or is there?

Quote:
Nimble-fingered artist Mui-Ling Teh makes her small, but perfectly formed, creations so tiny they can be appreciated only in close-up photographs. Using only paper, scissors and tweezers, Teh, 23, painstakingly creates 3mm high animals and flowers.

They are reckoned to be the smallest of their kind in the world.

The architecture student, who has worked in England, first experimented with origami when she was nine, using sweet wrappers to create truly dinky toys. She now takes just 20 minutes to make them. ‘I believe my first attempt took me an hour, but later I have managed to fold one in about 20 minutes,’ she said. ‘It depends on my state of mind and how much practice I have had with a particular model, as the process is unique every time.
I think she means the process is unique for each design, but what the hell do I know, I have trouble folding a handkerchief.

I've made a flock of cranes over the years, but never went that tiny!

I will often make them when I'm stressed or nervous or bored ... and I leave them where I make them. So, there are cranes in a lot of doctor's offices, hospital waiting rooms, ERs, and hospital rooms in this area. It variously annoyed and amused momwolf, who would give them out to staff she liked.

The boy is really good at origami, used to make stuff constantly, with anything from real origami paper to candy wrappers. He's good at teaching others how to make stuff, better than written instructions.
When we were still at school we made tons and tons of cranes, strung together in groups of 100... they were everywhere.

I used to be a ghost origami folder back in the 70s. My (Japanese) mother had an origami show on the local TV station, BTV-6 Ballarat. I'd come home from school and she'd be about to go in to the studio, and she'd dash in from work and say "quick! make me 5 frogs!" or whatever. She would demonstrate how to make one on the show, and mine would be the display of different sizes and colours afterwards. Frogs are still my favourite, and I also make them in waiting rooms and restaurants. I used to like to make them with the silver or gold paper that you pull out of a new pack of cigarettes (thin, but holds the creases wonderfully) but hardly meet anyone with fags anymore, let alone when they're opening a new pack.

I just made this instead of shovelling the drive. Not quite as small, but no toothpicks or tweezers. Now I really must go and shovel....

Oh, and it only took 5 minutes.... she's sloooooow
