Matrix Geeks: Need info....

OK, so all three movies are being played to death on cable.

I have a question about the french dude. the Muriganean??

Who is this guy? Why is he important? I mean, even from the first movie, I didn't get it, other than he's a prick and his girlfriend wanted to get the mack on with Neo.

Can someone enlighten me?

He is the head of a group of AIs that have broken their programming and are hiding in the Matrix from whatever AI 'government' is out in the real world. As an AI, he has access to a lot of information about the Matrix's architecture, and in a VR simulation, more than anywhere else, information is power.

And I didn't even like the sequels very much.

The "Merovingian" is also a nod to the supposed family in europe that was started when Mary Magdelane left and had Jesus' child.

Ok, the sequels suffered greatly by comparison to the original, but I liked the Merovingian (not to mention his lovely plug-in, Persephone, wearing satin ). But you have to admit, he did have some of the best lines, well delivered.

Merovingian: French is the best language to swear in.
[stream of curses]
Merovingian: It's like wiping your ass with silk.

Hehehe...nice.

ps, could not find mp3 of this line. rats. or, le rats.

Yeah, his scenes were good. Unfortunately, like most of the good scenes in the films, much of what made them good was the promise they implied of a good payoff in the end, which never came.
