How I know that I'm getting old

While out with the wife yesterday, I was flipping up and down the XM dial looking for something interesting. I hit one of the comedy channels and nearly drove off the road.

What did I hear?

Another exciting episode of the most fantastic crime fighter the world has ever known...
BAWK BAWK BAWK BAWWWWK... CHICKENMAN! (He's everywhere, he's everywhere!)

I nearly went out of my gourd, while my wife stared at me in confusion.

Y'see, when I was but a wee lad with curly hair and short pants in the mid-seventies, WIP was not yet the cannibalistic sports-talk cauldron that it is today. It was, instead, a Philadelphia institution as a music station, and it just so happens that they carried the adventures of Chickenman on a regular basis. While my young mind kept waiting futilely to hear Chickenman, y'know, actually FIGHT someone Batman-style, I found them greatly amusing nonetheless.

And now they are back in syndication. The site linked above even offers a limited-edition 14-disc set (!) containing all 273 episodes for the low low price of $129.00 plus shipping.

I was grooving on nostalgia when it hit me. Not only was this something that I hadn't heard for THIRTY YEARS, but thirty years ago I was also old enough to have this register in my memory as something notable.

Get off my lawn.

Thanks very much for linking to the Chickenman package. (It's my site.)

If "West Chester" is in Pennsylvania, then you live just down the road from the hometown of Chickenman's creator, Dick Orkin. (Lancaster area, I believe.)

Again, thanks.

Yeah, welcome to the Cellar, Dan.
There was a late night DJ on WBZ in Boston during '62/'63, that did some chickenman routines. I wonder if that was inspiration or even the beginnings of the Chickenman series?

Wow, that's weird...just a couple of weeks ago, the Chickenman intro popped into my head for no reason. My fiance thought I made it up (and thought I'd lost my mind).

I remember listening to Chickenman on the car radio in Albuquerque, NM while mom dropped dad off at work. And now, here he is again! He really is everywhere.

I remember reel to reel tapes, the original TV dinners, and black and white TV--but I don't remember The Chickenman.

Lucky me!

Nope. Draws a blank.

I remember Dr. Shock, Dr. Demento, etc. I just don't remember Chickenman.

I loved chickenman. I also loved the series of commercials that Dick and Bert used to do in the Philadelphia market.

Great stuff.

I haven't heard of the chickenman either. Do remember black & white tvs, having to "get up" and change the channel, having only 3 stations and the "National Anthem" at 12 midnight - when all channels were off.
