Jan 10, 2009: Dinner Watching You?

This time of year, more people are watching what they eat because of their New Years resolutions.
But how would you like what you eat watching you?

Quote:
I was at the grocery store and I got the urge to eat something new. I looked around and I didn't really see much until I found a food that could look back. It was only a hundred yen, which is less than a buck, so I figured I'd give it a whirl.

Quote:
It had a sticker on it that said that it should be cooked, but I didn't really know how to cook it. I tried to find stuff online, but there aren't a lot of English webpages devoted to eating fish eyes, so I just decided to boil it.
I didn't use any flavoring so it just ended up smelling horribly fishy.

Quote:
The eyeball was surrounded by a bunch of fat and a few severed eye muscles. I didn't really want a mouthfull of fat, so I didn't eat it. I suspect that it would be good in a soup or stew. I instead picked out the dark brown muscle, which actually tasted okay.

This crazy guy tells about his experience, upon finding this Tuna eyeball in the market, preparing and eating it, with pictures.

I guess I could get that hungry, but doubt I could get that curious.

Yuk. But you would be surprised what you would eat if you were really hungry.

Boiled? Everyone knows they should be glazed, and taste like chicken eyes.

Let's put dinner to a vote.

All in favor, say "Eye"!

There isn't much that isn't consumed in Asia. That being said I hardly think boiling it was the best thing, then again, I'm not big on poached eggs. I really don't know what would be best, perhaps deep frying it tempura style, then you would not feel like it was looking back at you.

I think "best" would be ground up with 35,000 lbs of beef.

Clear, concise, correct. This is why this man is a legend.

Once you start eating the eyes, you always come back to them.
It's a viscous circle. :-)

I thought this thread was going to be about the restaurant in China (it could be Japan) that serves up a deep fried whole fish which is still breathing when it hits your plate. If it's not breathing it basically means you're a bad chef.

They scale it live (which is pretty common for lots of fish - don't tell PETA or tw), then drop everything behind the head into the hot oil for a short buzz, then slap it on the plate.

Voila, breathing fish to eat.

Voila, no-one needs to heave.
Fixed it for ya.

Yeah...it doesn't sound like a meal I'd be ordering, but apparently it's one of those 'gotta have' meals or you're a no one.

btw, this info all comes from my Dad who was telling me about having watched some doco about it a few weeks ago, so I can't guarantee all the facts, but I'm sure it's all fairly accurate if I know my father at all.

Should have eaten it raw, softie.

Sheldon ... nice.

Ali, sounds quite possible, except the bit about the fish "breathing"... which is why, ahh, drowning a fish don't make no sense.
