June 6th, 2017: Senior Prom

Since the advent of the internet we’ve seen some really bizarre prom shenanigans, outfits worthy of all price levels of
prostitution, and vehicles never seen outside the farm, race track, or construction sites.
A huge game of can-you top-this. Well, top this.

Quote:
JOHNNY EDEN JR., WHO GOES by JJ, recently had a camel at an elaborate send-off before his high school prom in the Swampoodle area of North Philadelphia. The camel, brought in from Ohio, was there with three tons of sand and a Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce, and a Range Rover, among other things. It’s probably safe to say that, this year, JJ’s Friday night prom send-off was the biggest in Philly, if not the world.

Quote:
The idea, Eden’s mother, Saudia Shuler, told Billy Penn, was all about bringing Dubai to Philadelphia. Why Dubai? Because Shuler had planned to send Eden there as a graduation gift. Instead, she spent months—and $25,000, she said—planning the send-off party, which was a hit on their block and, later, on the internet, perhaps in part because Shuler carefully documented the proceedings on Instagram.

Boy's gonna sleep late in the morning.

Quote:
In addition to the camel, Eden had a stylist and three different outfits for the night. He also had three dates, among them his actual girlfriend—“the main event,” Eden told Billy Penn.
Hundreds showed up to help Shuler send her son off to the dance, and this all might just be a prelude to something even bigger: graduation. Shuler, who runs a soul food restaurant, said that she’s been working on it for a long time: “I’ll show you receipts all the way from two years ago.”
The comments were split along the lines of, nothing tops a mother’s love, and what a wonderful gift for your son.
On the other side, three dates to show women are a commodity, and that waste of money could be spent in better places than this.

I wonder if she can return the 3 tons of sand to Dubai for a rebate?
Or maybe pack it up in little baggies and sell it to homesick terrorists?

There was a little article in the throwaway commuter paper this morning that the mom had just beaten cancer and a stroke and had vowed that if she survived, she would throw the most lavish party she could for her son.

I'm not going to judge them, because who the hell am I to judge? But I have different values than they do. $25K is a nice chunk of change that could be used for many others thing that are far less frivolous. I can think of lots of things.

You could put on 4,400 nice parties like this for what you might pay for an ugly painting of a skull (or is that a painting of an ugly skull?)

Hmm.. 4400 camels, 4400 dates in custom made gowns, and 13200 tons of sand. Yup, some party.

It's an ugly painting of an ugly skull.
