Sept. 5th 2014: Great Dorset Steam Fair

These giants are a link to another age but the last ones were made in the 1930s so will be within living memory for older Britons.
They weighed in the region of twenty tons and were the mainstay of agriculture and road building.

I mentioned Fred Dibnah, the steeplejack, in IOTD a few weeks ago.

Fred was a man of many parts and he restored a 1912 traction engine over a period of twenty-seven years. It was sold, after his death, for £240,000 (about $390,000)

Dibnah's engine sold for £240,000 - Includes video.

It must be the season to be steamy.

Oh yes, the roar of the steam boilers, the smell of the crowd.
I'm partial to the man made leviathans also, but looking through the site map there's a hell of a lot of other stuff going on too. Something for everyone.

Lots of pictures in the gallery.

Although I wouldn't mind if they were, they're not stuck in the stodgy past.

Luxury camping... Well not exactly luxury, but for not a whole lot of money it should placate most picky spouses.

Thanks, Bruce. By coincidence, I toyed with the idea of posting the first of your three pics.

The aircraft are from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of the RAF. The Lancaster is flanked by a Spitfire and Hurricane.
This year the Lancaster has been joined in some of its displays by the only other airworthy example which flew over from Canada.
There is nothing quite like the sound of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.

It looks like they've dug some WW I style trenches complete with barbed wire, too.

We made it up to the Northern California equivalent in Willits.
Great sights and sounds with the equipment for the most part having a way to go to match those at Great Dorset.
The air looked like the second photo with smells of several different fuels, an Air Quality Management nightmare, but no one cared.
I expecially liked the irregular posting of "No Smoking" signs.
