April 4th, 2015: Surf's Up

No long story just a nice piece of glass by Paul DeSomma and Marsha Blaker.

Quote:
Marsha Blaker-DeSomma received her Masters Degree in both ceramics and glass and attended Pilchuck Glass School as a scholarship student and as a staff member. Paul DeSomma, on the other hand, is a glass artist who specializes in figurative work. Paul first blew glass in New York City in 1983, and spent the next 15 years working and studying in studios in Seattle, Washington and Murano, Italy.

I like the fact that Seattle is in Washington, but Murano is in Italy.

It's a beautiful piece.
I'll have to buy something like it for our Cellar den.
And then cry when one of my cats break it.

If there had been two cities they would have just said, "across Europe."

Pretty sure Italy's just a controlled territory, like Guam.

Pretty soon, Seattle may not even be in Washington state, if Expedia has its way.

I had the chance to go to Murano when I was in Venice.
I chose the island of San Michele instead (the graveyard). Bearing in mind this was my honeymoon I suppose it's no surprise the marriage didn't last!

In general, Countries in Europe and States of the USA are not terribly different in size. When trying to describe a physical location, it makes more sense to consider things comparable if they are similar in a physical aspect -such as size- rather than if they are similar in a more etherial aspect such as political importance.

How much would it help you to picture places on a map of the world if you were told of Plymouth, USA, or Klagenfurt, Carinthia?

Just admit that you are the United States Of Europe and be done with it.
