This is the best gallery I've found of the pictures in the series:

the photographer said the Bison had been burned in one of the area's many hot SPOTS, not hot springs.

His description of the event is here:

Excellent, we love it when a member/reader can point us to the whole story.

Yeah, that makes a whole lot more sense to the picture. Thanks Adak.

Thanks Adak! I'm surprised that the bison could out maneuver a grizzly in the woods, although I'd guess the bear is a stronger sprinter so maybe he got gassed on the road catching up and had nothing left when they left the macadam.

I'm glad I came back to this IOTD one more time. Bruce's initial introduction was funny, but not necessarily meant to be factual.
I kept coming back to the post and having continuing difficulty matching the bison's injuries with a bear attack, especially since one is seldom prey for the other.
The true story and outcome are much easier to believe.
I agree that it is important for Cellar folks to keep after an image until discrepancies and misinterpretations are worked out. Good job.
And may I add Good Job Giants!!

Yeah, when I was interpreting those red areas on its legs as maul wounds, I had a hard time figuring out how it was standing, let alone running. Burning makes more sense.

I couldn't figure out how that buffalo could be mauled that much, both sides, and get away, unless the bear went to wash his hands. They usually don't go wash up until lunch is cooling.

Yeah, and usually the chiuauas steal the carcas while the bears are busy washing.
