It's like an upside down Giant's Causeway.

That's exactly what it is. There are several locations around the world with this kind of columner basalt formation, Giant's Causeway is one of them. I've been to one close(ish) to where I live: http://www.flickr.com/photos/darrenjan/3273101003/

Not really chrystals, but contracted and shrunken lava, sort of like the bottom of a dried pond or lake.
In the Sierra Nevadas there is the Devil's Postpile where you can see the formation as columns from the side or pavers from the top.
The waterfall looks like an Inky Cap Mushroom.

Not trying to get into a VIC vs NSW competition here, Wombat, but we have one, too:
Organ Pipes National Park
It's quite close to Melbourne, where I used to live.

Geographical features made out of mashipots do not count. Sorry.

We have some of this rock formation near us, too (and thanks for the Haggis, Monster!)
