Mar 28, 2010: Chinese Deodorant Cannons

Cannons? Deodorant cannons? Yes, but don't worry, they won't shoot you stinky people.

Quote:
Beijing is to install 100 deodorant guns at a stinking landfill site on the edge of the city in a bid to dampen complaints about the capital's rubbish crisis.
The high-pressure guns, which can spray dozens of litres of fragrance per minute over a distance of up to 50m, are produced by several Chinese firms and based on German and Italian technology. They are already in use at several landfill sites, but they are merely a temporary fix.

Make it smell better by adding to the air pollution... hmmm.

Quote:
Beijing's waste problem - and China's - is expanding as fast as its economy, at about 8% each year. With millions more people now able to afford Starbucks, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other elements of a western, throwaway lifestyle, the landfill sites and illegal tips that ring the capital are close to overflowing.

According to the local government, the city of 17m people generates 18,000 tonnes of waste every day - 7,000 tonnes more than the capacity of municipal disposal plants.

"All landfill and treatment sites in Beijing will be full in four years. That's how long it takes to build a treatment plant. So we need to act right now to resolve the issue," said Wang Weiping, a waste expert in the city government. "It's necessary to restructure the current disposal system. We cannot rely on landfill anymore. It's a waste of space."

Less than 4% of Beijing's rubbish is recycled – the UK recycles 35% – but is still near the bottom of the EU recycling league. Two per cent of Beijing's rubbish is burned but the rest is dumped in landfill sites, which cover an area of 333,000 sq m. Cities throughout the country face a similar problem.

There are more than 200 legal and illegal sites around Beijing, according to Wang Jiuliang, a photographer who has spent the past year recording and plotting the wastelands using GPS systems and Google Earth.
They're even dumping human waste, from planes and trains, in the landfills, instead of processing it in sewage facilities.
With all the construction of new apartment buildings in urban areas, it's only going to get worse.

Makes me sick just looking at the pictures. People who are worried about bogus man-made warming should be worried instead about what the Communist Socialist Utopia is doing to our planet, and what will happen when they start dumping in the ocean. That's more likely to raise sea levels, and destroy life.

Interesting opinion. Man cannot do anything to harm the planet and global warming is bogus... unless you happen to be a communist?

I doubt the deodorant cannons will work anyway. Purely from personal experience - spraying anything to get rid of bad smells just leaves you with a worse one (no matter what Oust and Febreeze claim). Best thing to do is light a candle. I know - I have a cat litter tray in my room which I keep as clean as a whistle most days, but tends to get filled at night.

Not that I'm advocating setting fire to Bejing!

I didn't say man can't hurt the planet, I'm just stating facts that consensus by researchers vying for research grants is not science.

And yes, communist countries have the worst pollution record on the planet.

Got to back up Spudcon on this one. I lived over there for several years and saw the filth that piles up everywhere. And nobody cares. "I don't like the stink and the garbage and the ROUS's running about, but it's not MY problem; The government will do something about it someday" is the general attitude.

Agreed!
I think we have to keep in mind that there is still a very large rural/farmer/peasant population in China. It is not uncommon when they eat at home or for what passes as a restaurant to spit their food out on the floor during the meal if there is a bone, etc. they do not want to swallow. It's really gross, they hock it up, spit it out and are unfazed. I started looking at the floor like a mine field, plotting my exit strategy. Squatting in the field and relieving oneself then going right to the meal table is also not uncommon.

The point is that it may take the next generation or two to bring these populations up to speed on even personal hygiene and basic etiquette. Bringing their awareness and caring to garbage and landfill issues is certainly out of their scope at this point in their development.

Being anywhere within miles of that machine would be torture for me. I can't even walk past a Bath and Body without gagging. It affects my breathing. Maybe I'm allergic to those horrible artificial scents.

And, of course, Mrs. Z. and the Zlets love those places.

We in the West have spent about the last two centuries polluting the planet, shunting dangerous chemicals into our river systems, raising massified farming to epic levels, powering an industrial revolution through fossil fuels, and optimising our personal environments through central heating and air conditioning. Now we're full bore into the computer age and our relative wealth along with the speed of technological development ensures that a plentiful supply of old and obselete computers and mobile phones will sit alongside our old fridges and televisions.

Now, I'm not saying we don't have a stake in what the Chinese are now doing to the environment through their own industrial revolution, but really, it is a little rich to spend hundreds of years fucking up the planet in new and creative ways and then within a decade or so of becoming aware of our part in that planetary clusterfuck, to then point our collective finger at communist countries, or China in particular and call them bastards for doing the same. Particularly since they are still playing catch-up in terms of industrialising their nation, whilst we are enjoying our post-industrialisation sense of goodwill to Mother Earth.

Worth also noting that whilst China is still an appalling polluter, and is growing its fossil fuels consumption alarmingly, it is also the world's leading investor in renewable energy technologies.

Ditto. Damn commies! Oh, and don't forget, they've had nukes almost as long as we have. Industrial revolution had to come years after nuclear technology I guess.

That's because we could afford guns & butter, while they could only afford one or the other.
