Aug 19, 2010: A Cool Aquarium

A cool aquarium... very cool... as a matter of fact it's minus 5 degrees F.

Quote:
Welcome to The Big Chill, Japanese style! The "Kori no Suizokukan" (Ice Aquarium) in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, displays around 450 specimens of fish from over 80 different species, flash frozen in a life-like state after being unloaded from fishing vessels at a nearby port.
The ice columns are exposed to the open air inside the Aquarium so a powerful refrigeration system is constantly working to keep the ambient temperature at a bone-chilling minus 20 degrees Celsius (-5F). On hot days, the temperature differential between the Aquarium's interior and the outside air can exceed 50 degrees Celsius (58F). Visitors are able to don protective clothing to help them stay warm while browsing the eerily motionless displays, which are illuminated with icy pale blue lighting to enhance the "frozen world" effect.
What, hot days don't exceed 53 degrees F?
Oh, and there's a Maguro (tuna) Sashimi restaurant next door.

Someone got his conversion from °C to °F wrong.

A difference of 50°C between inside and out means 122°F.

Since they say it is -20°C inside, outside temp would be 30°C, meaning something like 85°F.

So, it is like living in Maine during the winter, only inside out. Just without the wind-chill factor and mosquitoes wearing parkas.

Welcome to the world's most boring aquarium.
Can you see fish swimming around? No.
Can you watch them eat at feeding time? No.

But you CAN see them on ice; just like a trip to your supermarket's frozen section, only it's painfully colder. Also, you have to pay.

My feelings exactly.

Made me think about what I currently have in my own freezer. A couple of types of wild salmon from Alaska and Washington state, tuna, halibut, cod, mahi mahi, crab, shrimp, squid and mussels. Perhaps I could open my own version of this aquarium.

So, in essence, it's a sushi museum.
