Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire

Apnews.excite claims "Former pro football player Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire as he led his team of Army Rangers up a hill during a firefight in Afghanistan last month, newspapers in California and Arizona reported Saturday."

Ain't that a kick in the ass. Fragged by his own men.

Was he an asshole or something?

I don't do sports so I don't understand why this is anymore important than any other friendly fire case.

Because of the sacrifice he made to become a ranger, with his brother, convinces me he believed very strongly in what he was doing. He was big, strong, tough and probably at least above average intelligence. All that together, makes me think he was probably as "gung ho" as a Ranger gets. Maybe even abrasive.
I hope it was an accident.

I would think it was. Fragging occured in Vietnam because the draftee grunts who had been in-country for a while, saw their green, newly arrived lieutenant giving stupid orders which were going to cost everyone's lives. I don't think that scenario applies in the Gulf.

That's only one reason to frag someone, and it doesn't have to be an officer.

Excuse me?

My whole point in asking was to inquire as to whether his death was any more tragic than any of the others over there.

He's no more special due to his jockness than any of the other hard-working, well liked, good-to-go personnel over there.

You might have to wait a bit for the answer to that. It looks like Blue58 is off the board for a few days.

"Friendly Fire" does not equal "fragging".

In certain situations it can be difficult to tell if a person moving out at the range of vision is friend or foe. Some folks will "shoot first, ask questions later" and sometimes, it's a friend that gets hit.

Pat Tillman

Troubleshooter, it had nothing to do with his "jockness".

After 9/11 his brother wanted to join the Army, and so he decided to as well, he passed up a multi-million dollar football contract, and became a Army Ranger, along with his brother. They both served in the same unit.

Pat Tillman was just like any other solider, and that's the way he wanted it. He didn't want any special treatment for who he was. He just wanted to serve his country.
