12/18/2003: F1 versus fighter jet

Elspode sent this along. This week the Cellar has sprouted a "girl talk thread" and a "guy talk thread" and here is what should be the ultimate guy talk question.

Who would win a race between a Formula 1 race car and a fighter jet?

Well, why not line 'em up and find out? Why not put Michael Schumacher, the finest F1 driver, against an Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet for a good ol-fashioned two out of three?

And so that's what they did. One each of 600, 900, and 1200 metres.

And the jet won, 2 out of 3.

I hate when they do this. It's so stupid...

Jets aren't meant to reach their highest speeds or accelerate as fast as a car.

It's like the man vs horse race. Man will ALWAYS beat a horse on a suficiently short stretch.

It proves nothing at all...ugh.

Wow! That's a pretty impressive turning radius considering that you don't have any contact with the ground!

If a top fuel dragster starts from a full stop at the starting line and you hit the starting line at 200 mph, he'll beat you 1320 feet to the finish.
Unless they radically change the gearing, F-1 cars aren't made for acceleration from a full stop. They make their power in the 14,000 to 18,000 rpm range.

I think the whole thing was a publicity stunt for the aircraft, actually. I just thought it was sort of fun. Definitely a guy thing.

You sound defensive. No need, you're right.

I saw this in a Car and Driver magazine once with an F-15 vs a Mustang or some such American car. I think it was just a ploy used by the magazine scribes to get free rides in a jet.

In this case I think that Elspode is definitely right. "Thursday's event was organized by the Italian defense department and hailed as a demonstration of Italian industry."

I'd be willing to bet that Schumacher got a ride too.

Speaking of Car&Driver, a couple years ago I went out to the mailbox to find the latest C&D with a picture of the latest Ferrari on the cover. As I'm looking at the picture, not 1 but 2 of that model, in red, come by, stop at the stop sign 30 feet away, then blast off up the road. A kodak moment.
Welcome to the Cellar, stlbob.

I've heard that a horse will beat a man in any race up to 100 miles (excluding very short sprints), but that a man wins thereafter.

Well, sure, because horses get all cramped up inside of a car, and they have to park and stretch their legs for a couple of hours.
