May 23, 2009: Cellar Facilities

Ever wonder what the Cellar facilities look like?
What's actually connected to the other end of that wire coming out of your PC?
Here ya go...

First, Undertoad and Pearl dug a hole under his garden.

Then after a trip down to Home depot, and a couple of weekends... Shazamm.

This is the Moderator's suite.

Two 69 hp/liter submarine engines provide backup power.

OK, I'm kidding... or lying, depending on your point of view.

Actually it's an ISP server in Sweden.

Quote:
This underground data center has greenhouses, waterfalls, German submarine engines, simulated daylight
and can withstand a hit from a hydrogen bomb. It looks like the secret HQ of a James Bond villain.

And it is real. It is a newly opened high-security data center run by one of Sweden’s largest ISPs,
located in an old nuclear bunker deep below the bedrock of Stockholm city, sealed off from
the world by entrance doors 40 cm thick (almost 16 inches).

I think they were just taking advantage of this former cold war bunker being available, and probably cheap, compared to space upstairs in the city.

I wonder if the fog machine came with it, or if they had to bring their own...

That's a nifty new twist on the old idea of recycling bunkers.

That's not fog.. It's exhaust from the submarine engines.

If it's simulated daylight they HAD to add some pollution for realism.

That server will not be of much use if they nuke out all the data transmission lines, but at least some egg heads will survive.
