6/23/2002: Bog guy

It would be so easy to rant on this guy being some sort of nut case, but y'know, these days, I try to assume that everyone's cool and that what they have worked out is special and interesting and that it works for them.

So, with that in mind, here is a guy who enjoys bogs. Mud. Quicksand. Deep, marshy wetlands. And how he enjoys them is, he goes out into them until they suck his body down into them, until he's not sure that he can escape.

And then he takes pics of it and writes about it and posts it all to his web page.

Clearly it must be a fetish, and the guestbook is full of guys who clearly make it a fetish, but this dude's text doesn't clearly indicate that he thinks of it that way. And yet, how could it be anything else -- why else would you enjoy it so much?

very bizare. yet how very normal.

This activity is very different but i would guess it has it roots in plain old thrill seeking. I leave that to those who have taken psych classes.

Girl Dies After Sea Rescue from Mud Flats

Somerset, U.K. Sunday June 23, 2002

A five-year-old girl has died from hypothermia after being rescued from mud flats.

The girl and her father, from Worcestershire, became trapped while walking at Burnham-on-sea in Somerset.

Coastguards at Swansea were alerted by the Burnham-on-Sea beach warden who raised the alarm when he saw them more than a mile from the shore.

An RAF helicopter rescue team winched the man to safety but the girl was missing for some time before she was spotted.

The pair were airlifted to Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare. But the girl later died hours later in the hospital's intensive care unit. The father is not seriously injured.

The pair got into difficulties during low water as the mud acted like quick sand.

Seems to me, it must be the same impulse that leads people to those mud spas. Or a simple nostalgie de boue, eh?

Now, the title scared the hell out of me. I was thinking bog in the british way, like "Don't go in the bog, I stinked it out." And I still thought that when I saw the picture, so... eeh.
