Oct 13th, 2016: Old Balls

Hurricane Mathew beat the southern coastline pretty good. In some places it destroyed things and in others it uncovered things. In Folly Beach South Carolina it uncovered a stash of Civil War Cannon balls.

Great souvenirs, eh? Nope, they blew them up.

Quote:
A cluster of Civil-War era artillery churned up from the sands of Folly Beach in South Carolina by Hurricane Matthew was safely detonated on Sunday evening. The 16 corroded cannonballs were found Sunday morning on the beach at East Ashley Avenue by former Folly Beach mayor Richard Beck who was walking the shoreline taking pictures of the wreckage Matthew left behind.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston police bomb squad were on the scene by 12:30, but couldn’t do anything until the tide was out. At around 7:00 PM, with the help of the United States Air Force Explosive Ordnance Team, authorities were able to safely detonate the cannonballs. While it’s unlikely the black powder inside of them would have ignited given their age, condition and sodden environment, as a matter of public safety, the policy is to avoid all risks and destroy the ordnance.

Talking

Pardon me, but those things look more like coprolites than fossilized cannon balls.

When do Civil War cannonballs stop being 'ordinance" and just become iron deposits?

It can only be a matter of time before the EOD chaps are brought in to dispose of an unexploded haggis.

Meanwhile in London, they are gathering valuable experience by blowing up sandwiches.

A bomb squad blew up a pesto sandwich after being called to investigate a suspicious package at London Bridge.

Officers closed off a busy high street on Sunday afternoon after a brown bag was discovered at a bus stop close to The Shard and London Bridge train station.

After an investigation, police decided to execute a controlled explosion on the package, which splattered pesto and bread across shop windows.

Did they use a fire cracker to blow it up? Seems fairly unimpressive, the damage to the sandwich.

I suppose that the art of the controlled explosion is to use as much force as is necessary to render a potential device safe, but not enough to set off a chain reaction.

All the same, as you say, it's not very impressive, is it?

A pesto sandwich on white bread should come with an explosive device.
