Why do we have to educate them to speak our language?? Why is that my responsibility??
if we welcome them in as LEGAL immigrants then we should be willing to help them learn english. i know some of you think that i feel there should be no gov't assistance to anyone, but i feel this is one area where we truly should help those wanting to learn. I EXPECT them to speak our common language, so i must be willing to help them learn.

i want americans to learn more than one language ( i wish i still remembered the spanish and french that i learned) - but i feel EVERYONE in america should AT LEAST speak english.

That's great, and I appreciate your view on that, however, my children getting a public school education has nothing to do with the governemnt spending untold millions of dollars on printing forms in multiple languages and interpreters and higher salaries for bilingual employees.

Well it kinda does. See, these government funded translations and translators are there to better serve those being governed. Government funded ed services to your kid through public schools are also there to better serve those being governed. Its just that you do see some merit in your child being educated with billions of tax dollars (even if you complain that full service and access is lacking - you gotta lawsuit there if youre correct and spunky), yet you see no merit in the tax millions used facilitating communication to or education for those who lack English fluency, no matter their situations or needs.
Fine. I disagree.
And I lived in Texas, too.
