August 6, 2008: Rocks Rock

Precious stones have intense color and some sparkle.
But, in the end, they're boring compared to many of the rocks in nature.
Sliced and polished, many rocks present pictures that you can stare at for a long time and keep finding new details... new landscapes... new scenes.

For example, these samples of Jasper.

These and more can be seen at Picture Stones.

I had the pleasure of attending a GeoFair at our local convention center a few months ago. I dig rocks. Specimens like these were on exhibit (and for sale at booths). Onyx can yield amazing specimens too. I agree, rocks like these are a lot more interesting than gemstones.

So these rocks weren't painted or anything? Just naturally like that?

No, just cut and polished.

Just a few examples for the many reasons geology starts with gee. These are beautiful pieces of a beautiful planet. They make me smile.

I have a jasper pendant somewhere that I got in California on my first honeymoon. They actually called it Picture Jasper.
