June 7th, 2016: Math for Fun

What? Fun? No, math is hard labor, math is aggravation, math is painful. Math pleads for opiates.
For math to be easy, to be fun, you have to be some kind of monster.
It’s not surprising these monsters occasionally gather on the pretext of talking mathematics, but it’s probably to reproduce.
When they gather at the annual Bridges Conference and Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Sweden (sexy place),
they present papers and whisper sweet nothings about mathy stuff.
Now the best way to be adored is to Show-&-Tell examples with your speech, like TED Talk.

...............

Enter Mathematical Art Galleries, where these Show-&-Tell items can be seen. Some are paper constructions like Happy Monkey,
but any medium can be seen, and digital illustrations are becoming popular.
But these are the ones that impressed me, sure as hell not whittled after supper on the Porch.

I use creative geometry to bring new life to old traditions of "magic woodcarving", i.e. the art of carving a piece of wood into
parts that are loose, but cannot be separated. Traditional examples are wooden chains and balls in cages, as seen in such
items as Welsh love spoons and European wool winders. Next year a book will be published by Fox Chapel Publishing Company,
explaining my carving technique and the geometric methods I use to develop my models.
.........................

I'm really impressed, not only the skill to make these, but the ability to design and plan the pieces.
They're made up of repetitive pieces so design one piece and just repeat, right?
Nope, if 1pc= Hard, then 5pcs = Hard X 500. Enjoy!

Damn, this took longer than I though it would. But youse guys are worthy.

I've always wanted to whittle a "magic woodcarving", as the article calls them, but I've never had quite the right setup...

When I do woodworking, I use my dad's workshop. I'm in a single bedroom condo, and there's no good whittlin' spot.

The nice thing about tapecraft is that the "sawdust" can just be stuck to a nearby surface, to be pulled off and discarded when the pile gets big enough.

Reminds me of a guy I've had bookmarked forever.

What better than a Klein bottle than a Klein bottle opener.
