Web hosting suggestions?

I'm going to be making some recordings with my camcorder and helmetcam. I'll be editing and compressing them down to "manageable" sizes of (I'm not sure) 5-40MB each. Any suggestions for affordable hosting?

Also, it would be cool (if it's not too expensive) to have the videos pushed so they could be viewed streaming instead of having to be downloaded. Any idea what that costs and where to look?

Are you going to be doing any business from the site or are you just showing off?

And what can you tell us about the helmet cam?

No business, just showing off. Primarily want to make videos from onboard a motorcycle, but it would be fun on a shifter kart, mountain bike, etc.. Probably mount the remote camera on the bike instead of on my helmet for a more stable image, feeding the signal to a camcorder. I chose the x-treme plus kit from http://www.helmetcamera.com/products.htm

i've been using ipower.com for the past two years, and it's been cheap and reliable, with one click installation of several popular open-source apps.

I looked at the iPower site, and it looks very reasonable. But I don't think they allow for anything other than HTTP streaming of RealVideo files. That may be what I'll have to go with, as it's free there. I'd like to go with a site that will stream .wmv files. They seem to download very quickly and you can select an image size when viewing them.

Cool camera and good luck with the hosting.

If you're not expecting a lot of traffic you could consider hosting from your own PC.

How can one do that without annoying one's ISP?

I'm thinking along the same lines myself.

As far as I know, if you're not doing business with it they shouldn't be able to say anything.

Check your service agreement.

I run everything though a Bluewho account, prices are great and the service is incredible, I almost always get a response from a competent individual within 10 minutes with email support. Being able to put as many seperate accounts as you want makes it easy to have multiple sites on the one account as well.

I'm actually in the process of switching from Comcast to SBC/Yahoo for their $14.95/mo promo. I could ask SBC if I can stream video files or not. I run a laptop at home; I can't say I'm too interested in having it always be on for server duties.

I contacted BlueWho.com and asked if they could stream .wmv files. They replied they cannot, that I would need a dedicated server for that. It's starting to sound like doing it the way I want to won't be cost-effective.

I guess I'll chime in with my 2 cents.

This company is run by a couple of guys who I went to high school with. I've had accounts with them off and on and haven't really had any significant issues or downtime. They have a pretty good user community as well.

:2 more cents:

I use Blarg! online services. I use them for home and work. They're the best. They have a program that has a modest cap on storage space, and unlimited bandwidth. Maybe that's a good trade off for you. Check them out.

Here's the first (and only) onboard video so far. Learning quickly we take for granted what our own eyes and brain do so well automatically; working to improve quality. Going from bright light to shadows and back hurts the resolution tremendously.
