How close are the kids to him? Would they want to do a road trip with you to go see him while he's still in good shape? Or is he a distant relative to them, and he barely registers on their radar?

We had one final summer where we got to visit my uncle who had lung cancer before he died. My son really didn't care. He was happy to play with all the cousins, but I'd have to remind him now who that uncle was. But my daughter had a few nice moments to interact with him, and I think it was good for her to see him again while he was still in good shape. In our case, there was lots of other family around, so the kids could run off and play with cousins when they got bored.

As an aside, it's kind of cold, but we use this uncle as an example when we talk with them about why you shouldn't smoke. It really personalizes it.

The latter, glatt. And their cousins on that side are completely unknown to them. I only met them last fall myself. It had been 10 years since I saw Biff and his crew for me. My cousins' kids are a couple years older.

I will have to talk it over with them. I don't know when or if I will be able to take the time to go see him. I may have to fly down.

"Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young To Die"

The old Rocker wore his hair too long,
wore his trouser cuffs too tight.
Unfashionable to the end --- drank his ale too light.
Death's head belt buckle --- yesterday's dreams ---
the transport caf' prophet of doom.
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
in his post-war-babe gloom.

Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die.

He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys
all of his mates are doing time:
married with three kids up by the ring road
sold their souls straight down the line.
And some of them own little sports cars
and meet at the tennis club do's.
For drinks on a Sunday --- work on Monday.
They've thrown away their blue suede shoes.

Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die.

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die.
Very sorry Jim. very sorry. Look--go see him, you won't regret it (this story reminded me of you this morning).

Ok, ok.

My car was burglarized again last night. It looks like the loss amounts to a little light I use as my dash light. Fuckers.

I have a meeting at 10 that I'm very apprehensive about. I'm ill-prepared and frankly, what we're doing is useless, as the issues with reporting will be pretty much wiped out when we switch to semesters and summer term goes to the end of the reporting year.

I just don't want to be put on the firing line, and the Gestapo (newest manager)...well that's her style. Though she knows nothign about any of this process (and professes she doesn't NEED to understand what any of us do she just has to make us do it) and is not MY supervisor, I expect it to be uncomfortable. My boss will be there too and she generally has my back.

The office morale is at an all-time low. Most of us don't know how to goose-step, having been in careers for so long where we are actually expected to be the adults we are treated as. Micro-management has the opposite effect in this environment, folks. Grievances have been filed by many. Not by me, not yet anyway.

So wish me luck if you feel so moved. I typically get myself worked up over stuff before I need to, and I hope that this is just me doing just that. But...I don't know.

Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll fire me.

Maybe collect unemployment and/or cash in my retirement. I'll become a park ranger, or an astronaut, or a cowboy. I think I'm too old to be a fireman. Life the life I've always dreamed of.

I can't even get fired when I want.

Just kidding. I worried for nothing. It was a good meeting and I was prepared and I have some good ideas on cleaning up the process. There was no 'jumping bad' on anyone. It felt like the professional sharing of ideas that gets things done. So, yay!

But I still want to be a Park Ranger.
