Songs that make you sentimental

I was in the car tonight, on the way home from Safeway (groceries), listening to the radio. This is something I rarely do, because most of the stuff they play nowadays is crap, but I decided to give it a go, since it was basically background noise for the conversation Paul and I were having.

I turned the station to 104.3, the Hippo, to get away from the Linkin Park that was funking up the other station, and I caught the end of some Rod Stewart song. While poking fun at him, some other song came on that I couldn't quite hear, so I turned it up.

OH. MY. GOD!

It was "Juke Box Hero" by Foreigner.

I have not heard this song in at least 6 years!

It reminds me of sitting in the dining room with Dave, singing along in over-the-top voices, and chatting in WBS.

Fun times. It just makes me miss him even more

So, what songs make you sentimental? And I don't want no stinkin' love songs in here, either. Unless there's a good story behind them.

"Time" from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". For some reason, for the last few years or so, every time I hear it, I want to sob.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun,
but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought,
or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the fields
The tolling of an iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you
Think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

And when the music plays
And when the words are
Touched with sorrow
When the music plays
I hear the sound
I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

And when the music plays
And when the words are
Touched with sorrow
When the music plays
And when the music plays
I hear the sound
I had to follow
Once upon a time

Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Mirrored in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you
Think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams

So he started rockin'
Ain't never gonna stop
Gotta keep on rockin'
Some day gonna make it to the top

And be a JUKE BOX HERO
(got stars in his eyes)
He's a JUKE BOX HERO

He took one guitar
JUKE BOX HERO
(got stars in his eyes)
Juke Box Hero
He'll come alive tonight

Man. What a great fucking song.

Bruce - great freaking song. Jen and I used to sing that all the time when we were kids. My mom had recorded the video off VH1. That's what ignited my love with the Moody Blues.

Troy- Sinead O'Connor

I remember it
In Dublin in a rainstorm
We're sitting in the long grass in summer
Keeping warm
I remember it
Every restless night
We were so young then we thought that everything we could possibly do was right
Then we move stolen from our very eyes
And I wondered where you went to
And tell me
When did the light die?
You will rise
You'll return
The Phoenix from the flame
And we'll learn and we'll rise
You'll return
Being what you are
There is no other Troy
For you to burn
And I never meant to hurt you
I swear I didn't mean those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
Oh, and I should love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
Do you love her?
Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
Do you want me?
Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me that you love me
But just sometimes I wonder if I should believe
Oh, I love you
God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
And die

But I will rise and I will return
The Phoenix from the flame
I have learned
I will rise
And you'll see me return
Being what I am
There is no other Troy
For me to burn

Well, you should have left the light on
You should have left the light on
Then I wouldn't have tried
You'd never have known
And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No, I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed
Now I can't let you go
If the door wasn't closed
No, I wouldn't have pulled you to me
And I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
if we hadn't been there in the first place
But I know you wanted me to be there
Every look that you threw told me so
But you should have left the light on
You should have left the light on

And the flame burned away
But you're still spitting fire
Make no difference what you say
You're still a liar
You're still a liar
You're still a liar

"Runaway Train" - Soul Asylum

Call you up in the middle of the night
Like a firefly without a light
You were there like a blowtorch burning
I was a key that could use a little turning

So tired that I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep

It seems no one can help me now
I'm in too deep there's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray

Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded

I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train

Everything is cut and dry
Day and night , earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it

Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman just a laughin' at the rain
Little out of touch , little insane
Just easier than dealing with the pain

Runaway train never comin' back
Runaway train tearin' up the track
Runaway train burnin' in my veins
Runaway but it always seems the same

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virtually anything by U2 does it as well. One will do for now.
U2 - One
Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say...
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it
Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's...
Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...life
One
HELL YEAH!
One that always gets me sentimental is "Silent Lucidity" by Queensryche... it's about the only Queesryche song I ever liked, but my good friends and I used to listen to music and play pool for hours, just shooting the shit, and that song invariably played on the jukebox. Same goes with "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica.
Also, a lot of classic rock like Blood Sweat & Tears, Three Dog Night, and Steppenwolf make me think back to my younger days.
I have a big box full of 8 tracks and a never-been-used car eight track player... I keep thinking I ought to install the 8-track in my 2000 Camaro SS and rock out with it. People would then be convinced I am a loser. Heheh.
Time - Alan Parsons Project
Can't Fight this Feeling - REO Speedwagon (I also have a fondness for One Lonely Night, but Can't fight this feeling makes my eyes strangely moist)
Oh, and guaranteed to turn me into a weeping puddle of mush every time ... Amazing Grace. On bagpipes.
That's better. Restores my sense of balance in the universe.
(Dammit, four tries to post this thing. That 90 seconds between posts counter is just really impinging on my snappy repartee ...)
