7/6/2004: Bats delay bridge demolition

It's hard to see in the image until you look closely, but yes, those are bats. According to the full story, 200 free-tailed bats living under a bridge in western Georgia have stopped its demolition. They are waiting for the young ones to develop before knocking down their temporary home.

Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe they were superstitious and afraid of the devil

That picture hurts my eyes because I can't figure out the point of view. Are they wedged in between two hunks of concrete or what?

Biologists confirmed that some were pregnant, and the state and the contractor agreed to postpone the work until mid-August.
I don't want to know how they determined that. Oh hell, yes I do.

so how do they stop future bat-moms from getting pregnant and making the bridge their home?

Here's another bat-related construction halt.

They have a fairly set season. A few months after that they'll wander in and let off a couple of hundred blanks to scare them all out, set up some ultrasonic devices to keep them away, set the explosives and problem solved.

Hmm, dont bats like to hang vertically?

I too can't figure out if the pic has been shot from a horizontal or vertical (looking down) point of view. Cute bats though!

Umm... why do they think it is a "temporary home" for the bats? is it cause its gonna get obliterated soon? It seems that if the bats are living under a bridge, they got no where else to live and thus that IS their home.

Not to be a lefty enviromentalist or anything, but i hate to see cute lil animals suffer.

I agree Bullit, I doubt the bridge will fall and the bats will be able to say " oh well, the bridge is gone, lets just go live in the dark bushy cave in the mountain around the corner. "
