6/30/2004: Ugly new fish

Nothing new under the sun - but Brazilian scientists found this new and not-very-good-looking thing under the sea.

The fish, which is a kind of chimaera, or ratfish, is about 12 inches to 16 inches (30cm to 40cm) long, has large, wing-like fins, a whip-like tail and exposed nerves along its body that help it navigate in the deep, dark waters where it lives.

It's a deep sea creature, it wasn't expecting someone to come down there with a camera. It never had a chance to freshen up and put its face on.

Oh, I dunno. Do we want to try it with lemon juice on the grill, or do the whole thing with sticky rice and seaweed and the weird spicy stuff?

Look for this new fellow to show up as a bad guy in NEMO II

I'm sure there are other unknown species down there. I think it's marvelous to see these previously unknown ones.
With so many species of animals and plants going extinct every year, it's refreshing to see something new popping up.

I guess the real issue is what constitutes "ugly", as most of these sea creatures have evolved over time to live in extreme depths of the ocean where no light can even reach. Many seem to have evolved with big eyes and disproportionate mouths full of sharp teeth to increase their feeding potential. Some have evolved with appendages that act as lures for other fish or sea creatures such as the Angler Fish.

I'd like to think while they may seem unsightly or a bit unnerving, they are in fact beautiful just by the fact of their unique adaptation to their surroundings.

{dogma}
Of course, we all should know that each and every creature was specifically designed by Jehovah God in exactly the way they needed to be designed in order to be successful in the environment which He chose for them. Then, He gave Man (note that I did not say "Woman", which is, of course, merely a less important and subservient part of Man) dominion over all of the beasts of the Earth.

I can prove all of this. It is in the Bible, which is, of course, the revealed and literal word of God, and which is factual down to the last semicolon.

Glad we all got that straight! Now, we can discuss the godless so-called "theories" of atheist scientists which are being shoved down the throats of our impressionable youth in an objective and honest manner, secure in the knowledge that we are living in accordance with the Divine Word and Revealed Truth.

Esplode you Jehova's Witness? Noticed the "Jehova God" part lol. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what is the difference between Jehova's and good ol fashion Presbyterians like me.
Feel free to PM so we don't take away from the majesty that is this fish.
