December 18, 2011 Recycled Christmas Tree

Quote:
This very tall Christmas tree is made from unique material.

This unique Christmas tree sits in Israel in the port city of Haifa. Made entirely of more than 5,400 recycled bottles, this tree not only brings some cheer to the area but also raises awareness surrounding environmental issues.

Any kind of "Christmas tree" in Haifa comes as a complete surprise to me.

I'm embarrassed to say my naive memory about Haifa
goes all the way back to May, 1948... nothing since.
But those newsreel images are still vivid... but maybe some are from the movies ?

I always marvel at how someone makes something out of water bottles and suddenly, "it raises awareness". Boats, planes, houses, trees. Riiiiiight. Surrrrre it does.

Perhaps awareness of how useful water bottles are and that we need to drink lots more so there's more garbage to use for making spectacularly crummy (_fill in blank_).

Recycled or re-used?
I'm happy with either, as long as they're not going into landfill.

And yes, I do believe seeing that much potential waste in one place does raise awareness. You can see your one bottle as simply something to discard. Whereas a large (IMO attractive) work has more impact.

I did give a little tilt to my row to see it was in Haifa too.
But again I'm not sure of coditions and tolerance there. The last I heard about religion in Israel is the hold ultra-conservatives are gaining in Jerusalem. They have voluntarily segregated buses, women should not be allowed to sing in public (their voices are too lascivious) and posters which show women are literally defaced - not scantily clad women, just any human being who has a vagina. Ed Gein excepted.
