Election Year Hoopla

The net and airwaves are full of reminders it's an election year...

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance
the people have made in the last 20 years.
Socialism is what they called public power.
Socialism is what they called social security.
Socialism is what they called farm price supports.
Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.
Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent
labor organizations.
Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

For decades, the Republicans have relied on the red scare to call good policy socialist and scare people away. Now that more and more people haven't grown up under the red scare, they're noticing that, in the US, the word socialist is only applied to good policy, and they're wondering why it's supposed to be a bad word.
