random bitch

If I never have another day like today at work, it'll be too soon.

One person had a computer that wouldn't boot, with an obscure error. This was about 9:20. Research suggested that there were two possible solutions; both failed. I decided the best bet was reformat & reinstall.

Whilst doing my research, I got an alarm that our Novell server's system volume was out of space. This was bad enough in and of itself, but the alarm went to everbody connected to the server, and my phone thus rang off the hook with people wanting to know if it was something they did or if there was a problem. So I got to identify some stuff that could be moved & or deleted to clear some space.

Well it turned out the lack of disk space hosed up an SQL Anywhere database so badly that it refused to recover itself. So we decided to punt and go back the the Friday night backup. No problem. Oops. The backup utility (Arcserve) wouldn't let me connect. 45 minutes of wacky troubleshooting ensued, and I got in and pulled the backed-up files.

Meanwhile my boss's assistant needed to burn a CD of some pictures to send to a printing company, but she didn't know how, so I showed her in the midst of doing all this. We were both freaking out about various things that were happening to us; it's a wonder we didn't commit mutual hari kari (or however you spell it).

Oh and the print server in the library stopped working, so I had to go futz with that.

Ooops, I still didn't get to that computer that was hosed up, well, at 3 PM I was able to hand it off to our other technician who works part time.

And then some folks couldn't connect to that database cause it has a recurring bug that convinces it that people are logged in when they aren't so it looks like there are more users than we're licensed for.

By this time it's 4:15, so I decided to just go get lunch, which I hadn't had yet. And not come back.

[my boss said, "Boy, that's about the worst we've had isn't it?" I reminded him of the time our mail server got hax0r3d!!!!]
