July 30, 2012 - Monopoly Chicago-style
Bored? Play Monopoly Chicago-style. The artist Bored (an individual? or a group?) has placed art installation pieces all around the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Sadly, this was not a real proposal. That would be so romantic!! The stacks of cards are made out of plywood and bolted to the sidewalk. The messages on the card gets changed from time to time. For more images and info visit This is Colossal and The Atlantic Cities. If you want to play the full-size game, come visit Monopoly in the Park, San Jose, California. The game is played on a permanent 930 square foot Monopoly board. They even have token-shape hats and jailhouse dress! Thanks to Stormieweather for the suggestion!! Yeah. That's great and everything, but the pedestrian in me is annoyed by a tripping hazard in the middle of the sidewalk. Most sidewalk obstructions are fairly tall and easy to see. Fire hydrants, newspaper boxes, etc., but these shoe box sized houses are begging to trip someone.

One would have to be near blind to not notice the bright orange and yellow of those particular pieces. However, it's entirely possible to not see them because of this. And in those cases, they asked for it.

Damn straight. I'm sick of doofuses meandering about with their eyes glued to their dumbphone, totally oblivious. Enough random tripping or shin-banging hazards would combat this. To heck with speed humps and stuff, i want pedestrian obstacles!

Yeah. I'm thinking of my mom. She'll be walking along, talking to you and trip over an uneven paver in the sidewalk. It's criminal to put these things out in the middle of the sidewalk. Some old lady will break a hip on them.

Also these sidewalks in the picture aren't currently very crowded, but if you are on a crowded sidewalk, you can be following behind someone and not be able to see the ground in front of them because they are blocking your view. They might be behind someone in front of them, and their view is similarly obstructed. They come up upon these houses at the last second, and step over them in order not to trip. You don't see their body swerve out of the way, like it would with a fire hydrant or a newspaper box, so you don't have the visual cue that you need to watch out.
I don't have a problem with the dice and stacks of cards, because they are in a protected area behind a parking sign, but those houses are right out in the middle of the sidewalk in the spot where people walk. |
