March 17, 2007: $206 million in cash

Fark today points out this story of a Mexican drug raid, centered around trackers in pseudoephedrin -- you knew it as Sudafed, and it's used in making methamphetamine.

Before Sudafed (and other such medicatinons) changed the formula (to something less effective), meth lab people were buying and stealing it in large quantities. When the US cracked down on it, Mexico became the largest producer of it - and thus, the Mexican traffickers of it got rich beyond belief.

Thus, most of the bills there are 100s. From a decongestant that was sold over-the-counter a year ago.

More pics are at the slideshow linked from the story.

I read the story/saw the slide show. Two things impressed me: how big a "block" the money stacked up to be, and how they were able to hide the $206 million.

Sounds like a good enough reason to invade, oh sorry...carpet bomb.

Does Canada make this "pseudo" as well?

How do you know they don't have another few hundred million socked away in the bank somewhere? This might just be the petty cash fund.

If I were there, I'd be tempted to find out what it would feel like to lie down on top of that stack.

Pfft. I used to work at the Federal Reserve in Philly. I didn't work in the vault area, but down there the bills are crisper, shrink wrapped, and stacked higher.

Still, I guess I wouldn't throw away a large pile of worn $100 bills.

Wow.

Never seen a picture of $205,999,990 USD before. I recognize that ten bucks equivalent in pesos, though.

Good point. It's not leprechauns with pots o' gold anymore, it's Mexican drug lords.

I'd like to roll around and toss the money in the air... like some cheezy movie scene. Maybe even "neked"...

Three statements from the Link;
Quote:
"This organization had been introducing the illegally imported product to our country and maybe to the United States," Medina Mora said.

Since the U.S. cracked down on the mass sale of cold medicines used to make methamphetamines, Mexico has become one of the world's largest producers of the synthetic drug.

Medina Mora said Thursday's raid was connected to an investigation into an alleged front company, Unimed Pharm Chem de Mexico SA, which is believed to have imported large quantities of the ingredients needed to make methamphetamines from Asia.
Two say imported and one says Mexican made??

Apparently they are importing pseudoephedrine, but are they the worlds largest producer of cold medicines or methamphetamines? Can't see any reason for the former so I guess the latter.

So how are they sneaking it into the United States? Oh, wait, we're talking about Mexico....nevermind.

Wow, that's very awesome. I hope this isn't one of those situations where they have to burn it all.
