November 6, 2007: Bears in Playground

The story and four thumbnails linking to bigger pictures.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals...roundbears.asp

Scroll down to Urban Bears Play in Anchorage Park for a few more shots.

http://alaska.apwa.net/resources.asp?sec=12

I was going to try and find some contact information to request permission to actually get permission to list the pictures but all the news stories on this incident say the pictures were snapped by a "resident of Anchorage Alaska" and give no further information.

The bear pictures are neat, and IotD worthy, but in my opinion, they should be in the thread, not presented as links.

Edit: There's also no story here to go with the pictures. There should always be a story to go with IotD. That's what makes it IotD.

They're probably smelling all the tasty children that had played there earlier.

Oh IOTD, how far you've come from just thinking about eating the Friday animal.

Hmm, If the pictures are user posted can The Cellar get in copyright trouble if we post them?

I would be more than willing to toss an IotD picture on my personal hosting site and then inmage linking them here. If someone sends me an e-mail to pull them, I will.

I just don't want to ge the Cellar shut down.

And for story, you want the real story or a fake one? The real one is the link from Snopes.

I took the photos of the bears on our play equipment. I was getting the boys (ages 3 & 4) ready for daycare in the morning. My mom (who lives downstairs) called me and said to look out the window at the playset. Ta-da! There they were. 4 black bears having a grand old time. You can see in a few of the photos that one of the bears is chewing on my son's fire truck. Occasionally, he would bite down on the button that would sound the siren. He would jump up and give it a strange look. But, it didn't scare him off. After about 20 minutes, I figured I had better scare them off so they wouldn't think our playset was a good place to return. I threw rocks and dirt clods at them. At first, they just sniffed the rocks and looked at me. I actually connected with one of them (finally) and they sauntered away. They left bite marks in the slide and in the toys. There are scratch marks in the wood.

Since then, my husband hooked up an air horn. That way, the boys can alert me if a moose or bear or porcupine or any other critter comes around.

This past summer [2007] we have had other groups of bears. One of them even peed in our driveway!
My story, "and thus ended the reign of the porridge stealing Goldilocks."

And the full set of pictures from the Alaska Chapter.
