I'm surprised they can make any forward progress at all. I'd expect them to just stay in one spot and spin when you paddle.

What's with the strings? Both bowls have them, though they are obviously different bowls. Maybe it's a relatively short waterway, and they pull the washbowls back for each kid to cross?

Well, you can't leave yer travellin' bowl just floating around willy nilly, can you? Maybe they tie to a dock. Ha! OK, they probably bring them on land but the string would help in 'pulling.' Also, they have bike locks because kids are ALWAYS stealing other kids' bowls for joy rides.

Coracle Doesn't say on the wikipedia article how to get anywhere, other sources suggest you more sort of pull from the front than paddle at the sides, also mentiones was making a figure of eight motion on one side.

Having a string dragging behind may be like a drogue anchor acting somewhat like a rudder, explaining why they don't just go round and round in a circles will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?

Even if they don't, I bet they pressed on...

I remember as a kid having one of those cheap inflatable rafts and trying to paddle it with a single canoe paddle. That was possible, but very hard. You spun much more than you went forward.

Dad used to get those giant machinery (bulldozers and the like) innertubes that we could play in or on at the gravel pit. You had to be pretty quick with your arms on both sides to go forward.

I once cried because I had no washbowl. Then I met a man who had no washbowl arms.

I keep suppressing a giggle as I imagine that poor one-armed kid trying to paddle in a straight line. I'm going to Hell.

Don't worry. I'll save you the room next to mine. I'm on track to be Satan's lover, so I'll get pretty much anything me and my friends want.
