I spent 15 hours on the range Saturday going through a ton of 5.56mm green tip. It was weapons qualification and I:

zero range for iron sights
zero range for CCO
Day qualification
NBC qual
Nightfire qual.

Here's pics of the firing line & a my M4 with pec-15 and CCO.

I apologize for not explaining it better. First you fire at targets to adjust your iron sights. That is followed by firing at targets to adjust your CCO (Close Combat Optics). You have to be able to put 5 out of 6 shots in a 3 inch circle at 50 meters. Once that is done, you move to the qualification range where you shoot in the prone supported, prone unsupported, and kneeling unsupported positions at torso size pop up targets ranging from 50 meters to 300 meters. You have to knock down a minimum of 23 out of 40 targets to meet qualification. Then you have to shoot NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical). This is firing wearing your gas mask at 20 pop up targets. For nite fire, you shoot at 30 pop up targets at night that have a blinking light to simulate a muzzle flash. To aid you, you are wearing NVG (Night Vision Goggles) and you have a PEC-15 (this is an infrared laser aiming device).

It is just a long day and into the night of shooting.

Wow. That *is* a lot of "green tip". Wow. "...300 meters" Really? and not with a specialized sniper weapong? That's very impressive. Thanks for the expanded explanation Sarge

300 meters is standard, even for basic training. Marines have 500 meter targets

I've had the hot brass from another shooter before. Never fun. We switched from M16A2 to M4 carbines in 2004. The M16 is far more accurate. The M4 is compact and used for close combat. The CCO is simply a red dot aiming device for quick shots. If you can get issued an ACOG, you are top dawg
