yes.

I can scan, (I used the HPsmrtwhatev to check it was working as a scanner) but not from paint.net

I realize it's the only printer/scanner; but, have you set it as the default so that Paint.net might recognize it rather than the old one?

If HP Support Assistant has updated your Printer/Scanner and all of the available Scanner Drivers are installed, then I suppose you have to look to Paint.net for answers. I'm running WIN10 on an HP and have a HP Printer/Scanner like you; but, I don't have Paint.net.

I can tell you Microsoft Paint 3D, which comes with WIN10, doesn't scan from the app. OTOH, the original Microsoft Paint, that also comes with WIN10, does.

yes, new one is set as default, but it's not the only one... the old one is still there because my (more responsible) son is using it to scan. You may have hit on the issue, I will investigate further... thanks. perhaps I need to remove old one entirely, then add back in after new one is operating as required? Will have to wait until weekend, though. His online college work is timed and requires immediate scan and submit, he found that works well for him, so I'm not arguing -my needs are lesser atm.

I expected them both to show, though, like they do for print :/

You'll find that even though the printer and scanner are in one package, they each have their own drivers and have to be treated separately. There's also a WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) driver that has to be current to connect scanners with apps. I've read that this driver is necessary for Paint.net to interface with scanners.

You can download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP for free (I have it) and running it will correct a lot of those kinds of things automatically. I think(?) it can also be run right from the HP website without downloading.

thanks I will investigate those suggestions tomorrow. I did install separately as printer and scanner, but it's not unlikely I fucked up.

If anyone ever asks what your turn-offs and turn-ons are, you've got a one word answer for both... computer!

My computer keeps asking me that. Apparently it wants to set me up with a blind date.
