Dec 31st, 2019 : Sand

“Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives.” More true than not when the sand flows smoothly, steadily, evenly.
But some of us lead lives that are not smooth and steady, our sand looks like this...

Of course the chaos will often involve affairs of the heart...

Gary Greenberg graduated from UCLA studying psychology and art to become a photographer/filmmaker.
But what really blows his skirt up is microphotography, seeing nature up close and personal.
So he went to London and got a PhD in developmental biology which led to fellowships, teaching, and research positions.

He invented several ways to improve his craft which gave him 19 patents and a call from NASA to photograph space stuff they
brought home. On his website he shows photographs and sells prints of sand, food, flowers, Space sand, and 3-D pictures.

In the grinding down process of making sand, one would think that the little spikes of the foram (top right) would wear off.

The stuff between the spikes must be softer

Question

I have heard two versions, that there are more grains of sand on earth than stars in the universe and then the opposite, e.g. more stars than grains of sand. Does anyone have out there have figures to confirm?
Thanks and happy new year, ya'll

Ok, after an exhaustive effort, I've got the numbers.

There are at least two dozen.

It has been a week since we've heard from Bruce. Should we worry?
