January 7, 2013 - Catching Snowflakes

From National Geographics Kids site under Winter Parent Tips:

Quote:
After reading about ICICLES, take a winter walk. If you live where winter is cold, look for icicles like the ones in the story. Have your child describe how it feels--cold, smooth, wet... Challenge your child to find other frozen things. Is there ice on a pond or stream in your neighborhood or a nearby park? (This can be a teachable moment during which you can remind your child never to walk on a frozen pond or stream without permission.)
Whatever you do, don't tell them to lick the street sign pole!

(Kinda wishing we had snow around here.)

Congrats on your 1,000th post CaliforniaMama!

ps, I thought I heard reports of drivers in Southern California caught unawares by this morning's snow... true? not true? not near you?

And looking down, the first bird says to the second, "Are you thinking what I'm thinking".

Teachable moments, like demonstrating why you don't eat yellow snow?

Thanx - I didn't even notice!

No snow here. California is a long state and we're about midway. We are too close to the coast to get cold enough for snow, but every once in a while we'll get a few flakes.

I had to look it up. Wikipedia says:
Quote:
A few unusual events in January 1962, February 1976, and December 1997 brought a light coating of snow . . . In March 2006, a total of 3.2 inches (8.1 cm) fell . . .
I wish I knew where all my old photos were. I have a great pic of me on my jumpy horse (horse suspended in frame by 4 super coils) in the yard with snow all around. It sure did seem like a lot more than just a couple of inches.

Miserable lunchtime today.
This week I am still on phased return, so I finish at lunchtime. However the school have allowed me to continue to cover 40 minutes at lunch, which means I don't lose as much money.

I didn't appreciate it today.
For every child running round with their mouth open there were four or five littlies wanting hugs and handwarming and asking if we could go back inside or wailing "I'm freezing! It's COLD!"

I did feel for them. I too was wearing the wrong footwear - we expected sleet at about 16.00, not snow from 10.15 onwards. I wore non-waterproof boots, which see me through a walk in the rain, but standing in slush are useless. Bless them, some were in Mary Janes which offer about as much protection as sandals. Their parents must have listened to the same weather reports. Wet feet will make you miserable quicker than any other part of the body.

I gave out eight pairs of gloves too. Got seven back. Honestly can't remember who got the eighth! Hopefully her parents will see them tonight and question her...

Wearing wellies tomorrow. Taking my flats in for inside wear.
